First, it gets better with time. The first 90 days of any deployment are calibration. Expect false positives. They are how the model learns your equipment.
Second, it requires human judgment. The model says the bearing on Conveyor 3 has an 82% probability of failing in the next 14 days. Your maintenance lead has to decide whether to pull the line down on a planned window, schedule a part, or watch it for another week. The AI does not make that call. A literate team does.

The team does not know how to feed it. Predictive models need clean asset hierarchies, accurate failure histories, and disciplined work-order coding. If your CMMS is full of free-text descriptions and missing failure codes, the model will not have anything to learn from. AI literacy training is also data discipline training.
The team does not know how to scale it. After the first asset works, leadership wants to roll it across the plant. But the team has not built the playbooks for prioritization, alert thresholds, or response workflows. The pilot becomes a demo that nobody can replicate.

Tie it to a measurable target. Unplanned downtime hours, mean time between failures, overtime spend, parts inventory. Pick one metric and report it every month.
Expand to the next asset class only after the first one is producing real numbers. Most companies that rush past this step end up with five half-deployed pilots and zero results.
